Winning Wheel
Updated over 2 weeks ago

Winning Wheel is a spinner wheel that automatically adds audience members to the wheel based on the criteria that you set. There is no need to upload a list of audience members, although if you want to upload a list you can use our Choice Circle interaction.

By default, Winning Wheel adds every audience member that left a comment in the chat. You can also change the criteria so the spinner wheel chooses a winner from those who commented during a specific interaction, or based on how many times they have commented during the session.

As your live session progresses, you may find some audience members commenting and others staying quiet. To encourage your audience members to comment, consider using StreamAlive's Winning Wheel.

In this guide, we’ll be looking at how you can create a winning wheel, customization options, how to run it and some frequently asked questions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. How Do You Add Names to the Wheel?
StreamAlive pulls participant names from the live chat (Zoom, YouTube, Microsoft Teams, etc.) and adds them directly to the wheel. If you want to upload your own list of people or items to add to a spinner wheel use the Choice Circle interaction.

  2. How Does It Work in the Presentation Live Screen?

    1. Once the Winning Wheel is set up, it will appear on the Presentation Live Screen, visible to both the presenter and the audience.

    2. The wheel will spin automatically and randomly select a winner, displaying their name in a highlighted result box.

    3. Since names are automatically added from people who commented in the chat, their names will be shown exactly as they appear in the chat feed.

    4. You can decide whether a name stays on the wheel for another chance or gets removed after being selected.

  3. What If You Want to Spin the Wheel Multiple Times?
You can run the wheel multiple times as long as there are names on the wheel.

  4. What If You Want to Upload Your Own List of Names?
If you want to upload your own list, you can use the Choice Circle interaction instead. Unlike the Winning Wheel interaction which picks up the names automatically from the chat, choice circle requires you add the options manually

  5. Once the wheel is added, customize the feature using the tabs on the right-hand side.

You can filter users that will appear on the wheel by setting up the minimum comments needed.

NOTE: If you want to enter people who participated in a specific interaction you will need to run the Winning Wheel as an ad-hoc interaction during your live session.

NOTE: If you want to manually upload a list of people or items to add to the spinner wheel then use the Choice Circle interaction.

You can also edit the design of the interactions like the background color, heading color/font, and so on.

  6. Click on Preview to see what it will look like during a session

  7. You can remove a winning participant from the wheel using the delete button

The delete name option allows presenters to remove specific participants from the wheel, ensuring accuracy and fairness in the selection process.

Imagine you're running a trivia contest during a live session, and the Winning Wheel is being used to pick a participant for the next question. A participant who has already won a previous round is still on the wheel, but you want to give others a fair chance to participate. By deleting their name, you ensure that new players get a turn, keeping the engagement balanced.

  8. If you’d like to filter the users on the wheel further, you can use the moderation feature to hide names that you do not want to appear on the wheel.

Creating an Ad-hoc Winning Wheel

What’s the Purpose of Creating an Ad-Hoc Winning Wheel?

An ad-hoc interaction in StreamAlive allows you to set up and run audience engagement features on the spot, without pre-planning them. This is perfect for moments when you want to interact dynamically with your audience based on real-time participation. (If you’re new to ad-hoc interactions, check out this help article for more details.)

Why Use an Ad-Hoc Winning Wheel?

In the Presentation Editor, you can only filter by number of comments, not by interaction participation and while you can plan interactions in advance, an ad-hoc Winning Wheel gives you the flexibility to select participants based on real-time engagement.

For example, if you want to reward audience members who participated in a specific interaction—such as answering a poll or submitting a word in a word cloud—you’ll need to run the Winning Wheel as an ad-hoc interaction during your live session.

By using the ad-hoc Winning Wheel, you can ensure that only those who engaged with a specific activity are entered, creating a fair and dynamic experience for your audience

  1. Click on the Start New Interaction button

  2. Click on the Winning Wheel Feature

  3. Customize your winning wheel

Here, you can filter the users based on the interactions or also the minimum number of comments that a user has to comment for their name to be put on the wheel.

  4. Choose a theme [Optional]

This step is optional but if you choose to continue without choosing, the interaction will use your default theme.

    Once ready click on Go

  5. The interaction has been created and you can run it as part of your presentation.

Please note that the wheel will spin automatically the first time. However, you will have to manually restart the wheel yourself for every spin after the first using the pop-up on the bottom right corner.

  7. If you’d like to filter the users on the wheel further, you can use the moderation feature to hide names that you do not want to appear on the wheel.
