How to run an ad hoc poll during your live session
How to run an ad hoc poll during your live session
Updated over 7 months ago

This tutorial will show you how to create a poll during your live session. It’s also possible to create a poll before your live session. If you’d like to learn how to do that, refer to our other tutorial on how to create a poll before your session starts.

We've assumed that you've connected to your live session, but if not, follow the appropriate tutorial on how to connect to your preferred platform.

Once connected, follow the instructions below:

1. On the live presentation page, click on the “+” button on the top left corner of the screen.

2. A pop-up window will appear with the interactions available. Choose from one of the poll options:

  • Power Poll - a regular poll with pre-defined options that the audience can vote on

  • Open-Ended Polls - A question to your audience but the options are not pre-defined. StreamAlive will visualize the options as your audience types it in the chat

  • Rating Polls - Allows your audience to vote on a pre-defined scale to determine an average rating (think Amazon product reviews).

For this guide, we will be looking at the Power Polls option.

3. Once selected, you can now edit your poll:

Enter your poll question in the Heading field and your poll options in the Option fields. (You can add up to 10 options)

Or, you can also use our AI Suggestions tool to help you generate and create your poll depending on your topic of choice by:

Clicking on the AI Suggestions button at the top.

A new window will appear. Here, enter the purpose and topic of your poll. Once done, click on “Show results”

Now, choose the best result that you like by clicking on the “Select” button next to it.
You can also refresh the results by clicking on the ‘Show Results” button.

Once selected, the poll heading and options will be updated.

After you’ve added your poll options you can customize the poll:

Under the settings tab:

  • Profanity Filter - Any comments containing explicit profanity will not be shown. This is limited to the English language.

  • One Answer Per Person - This option limits voting to one response per person

  • Show Comments Overlay - Show audience responses as a callout in the lower right corner of the presentation.

  • Allow minor typos - Similar responses from the chat will be counted together.

  • Options List - Here, you can choose to label the options numerically or alphabetically. Please note that if you change it to A, B, C and the audience types 1, 2, 3 in the chat, it won't record the votes. The presenter has to tell the audience to type A, B, C

Under the colors tab, you can customize in three areas:

  • Chart Color - This affects the horizontal bar

  • Background Color - This affects the background of the poll

  • Label Color - This affects the color of the text

Once you’re ready, click on “Go” to start the interaction.

4. When the poll is visible on your screen, ask your audience to vote by typing 1, 2, 3, etc. in the chat (or A, B, C, etc. if you changed that option in the above step).

However, please note that if you type “1, 2, 3” or “A, B, C” in a single comment, the bot will take that as multiple separate responses

5. The poll will keep running for as long as it is on the screen. To stop the interaction, click on the stop button at the bottom left corner of the live presentation screen.

6. If you want to reset and restart the poll at any point you can do that by first clicking the stop button and then the reset button which appears after.

7. After your live session has finished, you can view the results by going to the reports tab.
