This tutorial will show you how to create a poll before your live session starts. It’s also possible to create a poll during your live session. If you’d like to learn how to do that, refer to our other tutorial on how to run ad hoc polls while your live session is running.
1. On the home page, click on the “My presentations” tab on the left side menu..
2. Click on “New Presentation”
3. A pop-up window will appear with three options. To create your poll we’re going to start with a blank presentation.
Briefly, the three options to create a presentation are:
Create with AI: You can use this tool to dream up interaction ideas for you. You need to enter your topic and the A.I. will generate relevant audience interactions.
Choose template: You can choose from dozens of ready-made templates for a variety of different topics. They all come with relevant audience interactions..
Start blank: If you know what questions and audience interactions you want to run, this is where to start.
For this guide, we will be choosing the third option.
4. Now, click on the “+ New slide” button on the left side of the screen.
5. Once the new slide is added, a pop-up will appear. Again, you can choose to use AI to create your audience interactions or you can scroll down to the “Engagement Boosters” section and choose from one poll option. There are three polls that you can try.
Power Poll - a regular poll with pre-defined options that the audience can vote on
Open-Ended Polls - A question to your audience but the options are not pre-defined. StreamAlive will visualize the options as your audience types it in the chat
Rating Polls - Allows your audience to vote on a pre-defined scale to determine an average rating (think Amazon product reviews).
For this guide, we will be looking at the Power Polls option.
6. Once selected, a sidebar will appear on the right side where you can edit the power poll.
Enter your poll question in the Heading field.
Enter your poll options in the Option fields.
You can add up to 10 options.
A schematic of a poll is displayed on the slide in the central column which gives you an idea of how the poll will look but is not your actual poll.
7. After you’ve added your poll options you can customize the poll.
Audience Responses:
Allow multiple responses - This allows the chat to vote on more than one option on the same poll
Show Comments Overlay - Show audience responses as a callout in the lower right corner of the presentation.
Result Layout:
Show as percentage (%) - When enabled, the percentage of votes is shown. Otherwise, the number of votes is shown.
Show numerical options - When enabled, options are labelled as 1, 2, 3. Otherwise, as A, B, C.
Language:
Filter out profanity - Any comments containing explicit profanity will not be shown. This is limited to the English language.
8. If required, you can also customize the colors of your poll under the design menu.
By default, this is how your poll will look to your audience:
Using the customization options you can change the color of the poll.
9. When you’re happy with your poll options and customizations, click Save to save your presentation.
You can also preview how the slide will look by clicking on the Preview button. This opens a simulator to show how your presentation will look to your audience.
10. Now, you can choose to present your poll immediately or you can enter the details for a future live session under Schedule for later..
11. In this guide, we’re going to present our poll immediately, but the steps for presenting it later are similar. Click on the “Present” button and choose your preferred platform.
We’re using Google Meet in this tutorial. Learn how to connect to Google Meet in this article. For all our other supported meeting and streaming platforms, find the relevant information below.
12. Start your meeting (see step 11 on how to connect to your preferred platform). Once started, return to the StreamAlive tab to enter the meeting credentials and click Present.
13. StreamAlive will open a new Presentation screen and let you know that the StreamAlive bot is trying to connect to your meeting.
14. Switch to your meeting tab. Most meeting platforms require you to admit the StreamAlive bot manually. Different platforms have different UIs for this, but in Google Meet you’ll get a notification in the bottom left corner with the option to admit the StreamAlive bot.
Refer to step 11 above on how to admit the StreamAlive bot on other platforms.
15. Once completed, use the share screen option in Google Meet (or whichever platform you’re using) to share the StreamAlive tab with your audience. It’s just like sharing a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation.
16. Your audience will be able to vote in the poll when it is visible on the screen. Learn more on how to use the live presentation screen to navigate through your presentation.
When the poll is visible on your screen, ask your audience to vote by typing 1, 2, 3, etc. in the chat (or A, B, C, etc. if you changed that option in step 7 above).
However, please note that if you type “1, 2, 3” or “A, B, C” in a single comment,, the bot will take that as multiple separate responses
17. Restarting your poll
If you need to reset and restart the poll at any point you can do that by first clicking the stop button and then the reset button which appears after.
18. After your live session has finished, you can view the results by going to the reports tab.
